The first time I met Joan Shankland was in the basement of a church where the small fellowship met that my husband and I had just started. Joan and her husband, Tom, came with their new baby. Our church was struggling and many new people visited, but not many returned. Joan and Tom did...and over the next 20 plus years they became cherished friends and active members in the church.
There is an excitement in new believers that keeps us 'old believers' on our toes. This was -- and still is true of Joan. As you read this book, I believe you will be amazed at the simple, yet profound faith Joan has to believe God to intervene in the experiences He has allowed into her life. It was so nice to meet you and Tom over the past week. I enjoyed your company and getting to know you a little better. I was able to read your book on the long flight back to Seattle yesterday and wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed it. I think it's a great book for non-believers who are interested in hearing the answers to your questions: Does God really exist? How can I get to Heaven? and so many more...
As a long-time born-again-believer, I found the stories interesting and many reminders in the messages that I can apply to my own life, such as praising God in all circumstances and believing He will answer your prayers no matter how big or small. Your examples of asking Him and receiving seemingly impossible answers were amazing (such as the phone recording of the conversation between your daughter and her boyfriend, taking possession of the Sport Coach, and getting the Bibles to China). I am going to start asking for the impossible!
I love how you started at the beginning of your journey and explained the importance of forgiving your father in order to receive forgiveness from the Father. Many of us have unresolved anger, resentment, and pain from our childhood and these keep us from peace and growth if we don't forgive.
Thank you for sharing your story about smuggling Bibles into China. I was especially moved about how Chinese Christians have to rely on the Holy Spirit to lead them to Bible study - turn left, go up the stairs, down the hall, etc. What faith and courage these Christians have!
Your book is not about having the perfect Christian life without problems, it is about dealing with everyday life with Jesus Christ as your pilot. He leads us and He continues to teach us if we let Him, so we can be the light in the world for others.
